The bigger the booth, the broader the sound

The VicBooth Ultra 1x2 has become the perfect solution for voice recording mixed with character acting for Thomas Cordie, Chief Vocalization Officer at Glass Box Hero, in Belgium.

"Although I am a voice artist and only need a booth to do my own recordings, I chose to install the 1x2 Vicbooth Ultra instead of a 1x1 Vocal Booth for two reasons. First, when dealing with character acting and texts that require some more expression and dynamics, it helps to have some more space to avoid the boxiness or muddiness you risk when speaking at a greater distance than your average close-mic VO. A bigger booth would of course be better still for a broader sound, but for my space and purpose, I think the 1x2 does the trick nicely. I haven’t figured out the best position for the Cinema and Wavewood panels yet, but the handy VicFix mounting system allows me to play around with them."

A more important reason for this configuration is the fact that Thomas installed a monitor, a DAW controller, a mouse and a keyboard on a table inside the booth. "That way, I can keep maximum control and flexibility and can host live remote sessions with on-the-fly editing even when recording locally. My DAW, preamp and all noisy stuff (including colleagues or clients I can now invite over ;-) ) stay outside the booth, but I'm nearly as flexible inside during sessions as I am outside in front of my computer."

"I’m really happy with the way it integrates into my space"

"Furthermore, I’m really happy with the way it integrates into my space. The sober and modern black and white accords nicely with bright space and other office or studio furniture. And the booth itself does take up some space, but it really doesn’t feel like a heavy and cumbersome centerpiece of my studio, being literally next to my desk, ready to pop in for a quick retake while editing or so."

"Also, although it might take some remediation due to acoustic reflections (mind you, mic positioning makes a world of difference!), I really benefit from the view from the window panel: I can keep an eye on my control room, as well as invite some daylight and garden atmosphere into my sessions!"

A step forward for trailers and animation character acting

Thomas Cordie has used VicBooth Ultra for everything from imaging and trailers for national radio and television brands over animation character acting to corporate films and audio guides, both solo and directed or recorded remotely.

"I’m not saying I want to compete with the big studios, as external sessions with several people and their respective roles and expertise still have a lot of merits. But for the largest and ever-growing part of my business, It’s really a big relief and a considerable step forward in terms of service, flexibility and production value to have such a professional and consistent set-up right at home!"
