Audio performance in a truck

A TV editing and sound mixing room fully integrated into a mobile truck? Everything is possible. And you can even have a "Wavewood kitchen".

OB Blue is a 6-camera mobile unit with focus on all kinds of mid sized TV and streaming productions where audio performance is of premium importance.

For this project, Ulf Kruckenberg, Sound director and owner of Mobile Units Scandinavia, was looking at different solutions for the acoustical treatment. "As we only had a little less than three months to finish the whole interior it was out of the question to custom build every part. So we scanned the market for acoustical panels and found that there was actually only one brand who could supply all the different types of panels needed and at the same time in the quality and finishes we were demanding. That brand was Vicoustic and we are really pleased with the results in all aspects", says Ulf.

The whole construction, design and installation has been made inhouse and was first modelled in 3D to a level covering almost every detail. Having the large assortment of Vicoustic panels to choose from made the design process a lot easier. The objective was to create a mobile recording facility with an atmosphere and sound like no other and everyone who has since visited it has been lyrical about this very special work environment they've accomplished.

Striking Multifuser Metallic Gold

In the ceiling of the audio control room were mounted white VicPattern Ultra Wavewood with the addition of Cinema Round Ultra VMT above and in front of the listening position. The lower side walls are covered with VicPattern Ultra Wavewood in the cherry finish. For the upper side walls were choosen the Cinema Round Premium for the front half and the Multifuser Wood MKII for the rear part. Also the back wall got some cherry Ultra Wavewoods on it. "With the Cinema rounds in red together with the Multifusers in gold metallic the resulting appearance is really striking", says Ulf Kruckenberg.

The video production room has a similar ceiling treatment as the audio room but with sidewalls covered with Cinema Round Premium in gray and red. Although not seen in the pictures the back wall of this room also features a large field of the golden Multifusers.

Installation for bumping trucks

As a mobile truck will be somewhat bumping on the roads when travelling the panel mounting had to be made with this in mind. Therefore all the Ultra Wavewood panels are screwed. As the Cinema Round Premiums are very light-weight these are only glued in place while the heavier Cinema Round Ultra as well as the Multifusers are mounted with double VicFix J Profiles. No less than 79 Vicoustic panels are now fitted in this truck", says Ulf Kruckenberg, from Mobile Units Scandinavia.
