Apartment Studio Entresol Acoustic Treatment

The apartment's owner's goal was to create a home recording studio for electronic music recording, editing and mixing of recordings. An open mezzanine area was intended for this purpose. It required a very strong reduction of reverberation times in the studio part and in the other part of the apartment, open to the studio, below.

The layout of the rooms was very difficult in terms of acoustic adaptation. MJ Audio Lab proved to be up for the challenge. The apartment with an area of approximately 100m2 is divided into two floors. The lower "residential" one with a kitchen and a living room has an open area of about 52m2. The L-shaped area on the mezzanine for a recording studio is one non-divided space open to the living room and the living area below. The mezzanine area is 43m2.

Open spaces acoustic challenge

Acoustic measurements showed a reverberation time from 2.59 seconds at 125Hz to 1.18 seconds at 4kHz. Two floors of the apartment are connected by an open space above the living room and an opening with stairs. The calculations made it possible to plan the acoustic adaptation resulting in a reduction of the reverberation time in the entire band by over 70% to 0.9s at 125Hz or 0.3s at 4kHz.

Due to the extremely difficult location of the studio (open spaces in the residential part), the calibration of the lowest frequencies was planned using the Trinnov processor. To minimize the impact of reverberation from the lower floor, an additional acoustic adaptation of the living room was made (absorbing acoustic panels for the Vicoustic Cinema Round Premium ceiling).

Kitchen acoustic treatment

Several Cinema Round Premium panels were added in the kitchen's ceiling (part of the open apartment below the studio). The goal was to add some additional silence to the kitchen, and bedroom as well.
