Multipurpose room acoustic challenge
Following a detailed acoustic treatment case study by Vicoustic's professional Acousticians and Designers, an auditorium and open office of Avila’s latest coworking space, in Edificio Expo, Lisbon, was treated with sustainable acoustic panels, mostly produced from recycled plastic bottles.
There are some challenges when it comes to the acoustics of a multipurpose room such as the open space. Used both as an auditorium and as a coworking office, this large venue required special attention when Vicoustic approached it for acoustic treatment.
The different activities carried out within such a space require different acoustic conditions. For example, a space suitable for speech-related applications requires a lower room volume, a lower reverberation time, and an appropriate sound reinforcement system to achieve adequate word intelligibility.
By using absorption panels on the ceiling, it is expected that there will be a reduction in the energy that is being reflected from this surface, thus improving the intelligibility of the space and the comfort of the people in the room, reducing the reverberation time. By reducing the energy of these reflections, it is expected the background noise will decrease.
