"The Vicoustic Academy was really interesting in teaching how to understand acoustics and calculate the right treatment", says Garmt van der Zel, Product Manager at Mafico, based in the Netherlands, after attending the 11th Edition of the Vicoustic Academy and 2nd Vicoustic Convention 2024, last October.

Partners and audio enthusiasts from all over the world attended the event, visited the new installations of Vicoustic and learned the room acoustics basics in an intensive training course. According to Garmt van der Zel, in an interview following the event, what stands out in room acoustics is that sound treatment is a priority. 

“In acoustics, we always work from an empty space. For anything to sound good in that space, we have to make sure we use the right amount and type of products to treat the room. The exact use of the room has to be taken into account as well as the placement of all the loudspeakers, listener, etc. Acoustics are like the canvas for every good sounding room. If the room is not treated, no amount of money in equipment can ‘fix’ the sound, so treatment is essential. The Vicoustic Academy was really interesting in teaching how to understand acoustics and calculate the right treatment. I highly recommend it!"

"I was really impressed with the factory and quality control"

For Garmt van der Zel, the visit to Vicoustic was a pathway to know the company better and meet the people behind it.

“When I came in, I was really impressed. We had a factory tour, and I looked at all the quality control that goes into the products, and all the processes that were running very smoothly. I was extremely impressed with the facilities. I think what makes Vicoustic unique, when you compare them with other competitors is their innovation. They have very good looking products, and the quality of the products is like nothing in the industry. I also think that the price/quality relationship is very good.”

Garmt ven der Zel has a career in Hifi and acoustics spanning more than 20 years, when he opened a retail store with a business partner, to sell both high-end stereo systems and home cinemas. He later started working for a company that specializes in building studios and high-end home cinemas. He learned about acoustics and was involved in some extremely high-end projects in both the home and shipbuilding market. After three years with that company, Mafico approached him to work for them as a product manager for 20 hifi brands including Vicoustic.
